Social Economy

The social economy has been the priority area of ALTER FORUM’s activity, along with literacy and education. To do this we conduct training initiatives for self-employment, entrepreneurship and cooperatives. At present we have these basic programs in operation:

  • Leadership Course of Self-employment and social economy, primarily aimed at women
  • Program to support business revitalization
  • Couscous Factory in Smara
  • Oasis Sabor del Sahara

    Economia Social

    La economía social ha sido el área prioritario de actividad -junto con la alfabetización y educación- en ALTER FORUM INTERNACIONAL. Para ello llevamos a cabo iniciativas formativas de autoempleo y emprendimiento, cooperativismo y autogestión laboral.
    En la actualidad tenemos estos programas básicos en funcionamiento:

    • Curso sobre Autoempleo y Liderazgo en economía social. Dirigido fundamentalmente a mujeres
    • Programa de apoyo a la dinamización empresarial
    • Unidad de producción de Couscous en Esmara
    • Oasis Sabor del Sahara

Social Economy Course

In 2014 Alter Forum has organized the course in social economy to train the women to become self-employed entrepreneurs and community leaders. The workshops lasted for 6 months and were conducted by eminent Spanish experts to educate the women in social economy and provide them with the skills needed to start their own businesses.

    En 2014 Alter Forum ha organizado el curso de la economía social para capacitar a las mujeres a convertirse en empresarios autónomos y los líderes comunitarios. Los talleres duraron 6 meses, y se llevaron a cabo por expertos españoles eminentes para educar a las mujeres en la economía social y proporcionarles las habilidades necesarias para iniciar sus propios negocios.

Cuscus Factory

The Couscous Project is one of Alter Forum’s first micro-projects for the women of Smara who developed their own brand called “Al KHAIMA which became well known brand in Morocco and comes in variety of flavors. The project begun with the manual labor and has grown over the years to a factory that employs 30 women and benefits 200 people.

Sabor del Sahara

Sabor del Sahara project was established to bring tourism to Sahara and give people a taste of the rich Saharaui culture: an exotic experience of dinner with dancing in the desert tent. The Oasis is a magical place where the ocean and the desert embrace, with cabanas, festive tents and sauna and it hosted two k42 Sahara marathons. Oasis has become a kitesurf paradise, the virgin beaches and open desert are the playground for the frequent visitors from the Canary Island

Goats Breeding

Alter Forum inaugurates a new project with support of the National Initiative providing 44 breeding goats for people without material resources. This is Alter Forum ‘s 24th socio-economic project inaugurated in the Saharan cities from its creation in 2002 until today.
